Writing Your Thriller - How to Use Life Experiences and Imagination in Fiction

Having written and published 33 novels, I have some experience in writing fiction.  The most oft asked question I get, when doing book signing and author talks is, how do you work up a story line?

USING LIFE EXPERIENCE TO CRAFT FICTION

The answer is simple:  I draw on my own life experiences just as any good writer does.  Look at plotting a story as you would ripples in a pond.    What happens when the rock hits the water?  The rock and water are the junction points for the primary theme of your novel.  The ripples are the actions that are generated by that primary them.  Let's use my latest novel, Angels In Mourning, as an example.

This thriller uses a private detective as its protagonist.  I wanted a classic feel to the book, so I made him a noir style, 50's-60's somewhat hard boiled P.I., Set in a modern storyline.  The experience I used to build the story was a child abduction.  And for this, I used my own experience.

A quarter of a century earlier, my son was abducted my his mother, and disappeared for four months before the Private Investigator we hired found him.  I let this simmer in my head for a long time -- a very long time -- before I put this experience to work.

PUTTING LIFE EXPERIENCE TO WORK IN FICTION

In crafting my novel, I used this experience, but magnified it strongly.  Instead of a family abduction, it became a non-family abduction by a predator.   The emotions I had felt during the period my son was missing, served to fuel my writing and infuse the characters with emotion on the subject.  But, a good storyline needs more than one antagonist, two is okay, but more can be better -- if handled properly.

I used  the murder of my protagonist's best friend, to set up diverging lines of possibilities, each having the ability to flow toward separate conclusions, which is a good ploy to utilize to keep the reader flipping pages.

Utilizing your life experiences in every aspect of your writing, be it newscasts that pique your interest, scenes you have come upon while out and about, such as car accidents, disturbances at sporting events, crimes that have been perpetrated on you or on acquaintances all can be used to strengthen and build your novel.

USING IMAGINATION WITH EXPERIENCE IN CRAFTING FICTION THRILLERS

Flying in an airplane and analyzing the passengers around you is a great method for character building.  Picture yourself in an airplane;  a man sitting near you has Middle Eastern features.  Imagine that during the flight, this man and several others take over the airplane.  They kill an older man who didn't obey them fast enough.  Then they hold the passengers hostage until the police negotiate and/or overtake them.

You wonder what happens to the man who was killed.  If it was your father, what would you do?  Those thoughts formed the basic idea for one of my thrillers, The Hyte Maneuver, which was a successful novel in both hardcover and paperback -- a serial Murder Thriller that focused on the surviving passengers of the hijacking.

MY FICTION WRITING EXPERIENCE

From my background, I've given you two examples of how to use life experience and your imagination to write a successful thriller.  You can bring your own experiences, no matter how trivial or how potent they may have been and draw on them to liven and heighten your writing, as I have done over the past 30 years.

Death on the High Floor: A Legal Thriller, By: Charles Rosenberg

Currently the market for the genre of legal thrillers is abundantly populated and while many legal thrillers do turn out to be pretty decent reads - there are some that really are of a better class. Death on a High Floor, written by lawyer-turned-author Charles Rosenberg, happens to fall into the better class of legal thrillers. Available in paperback or e-book edition, this book is a very well written legal thriller that captures the reader's attention immediately with its tightly devised plot. The story continually moves at an exciting pace and the creative plot twists continue to keep the reader absorbed until the very last word.

Death on a High Floor starts out like most legal thrillers; there is a murder of senior partner Simon Rafer and a central character that seems like the most likely suspect - sixty year old senior partner Robert Tarza. Robert Tarza is a seasoned partner in the Los Angeles based law firm of Marbury Marfan and a known collector of very rare coins. It is Robert Tarza's dealings with his rare coin collecting that lends to evidence placing him as the main suspect in this murder mystery. The rare coin aspect of this story also leads into some very interesting plot twists. The central plot of the murder mystery is exactly where this book's similarity to the others in the genre ends.

As the story develops, other characters are introduced that are seemingly just as viable as Robert Tarza as potential murder suspects; such as Jenna James the intelligent, ambitious and attentive young lawyer that eventually becomes a major player in Robert Tarza's defense. The fun in reading this book is not only moving along with the story as the murder mystery is unraveled; the fun is in the well paced and realistically written court room scenes and pragmatic dialog between characters. This story does not lose a step; the enthralling pace throughout the story remains consistent. Also, this story works better than most because of the down-to-earth portrayal of the drama, the novel court room antics, and the original encounters with the press, photographers and bloggers. The author's expertise as an attorney is well represented in the verbiage that is used both in the court room and among the attorneys within the story. Death on a High Floor is not over laden with confusing legal terminology and it is very easy to follow for readers that are unfamiliar with the legal world. Although the eventual conclusion of the story is predictable, it is the road to the end of the story that is not.

The Fragrant Trail - A Rusty Linden Mystery by Patricia Turner - Book Review

When Australian crime reporter Rusty Linden receives a letter from someone calling himself, "The Executioner," her gut feeling tells her he needs to be taken seriously. She contacts Investigator Rick Williams, who also has received a letter. She has to convince him that it is more than a prank, but unfortunately, with such little information they are given, there is nothing they can do to stop an attempt on a woman's life. The Executioner tries to strangle an office cleaning lady; however, she is able to fight him off. Because he has gloves on and his face is covered, she can only identify him as being a tall man. She also noticed that he carried a very strong scent of perfume on him.

As the Executioner continues to send letters to Rusty, he makes sure that he carries out all of his promises. This time women are actually being murdered. Rusty continues to take her letters to Rick Williams. He does not want to share information with an investigative reporter, however, since she is the one getting the information he has to work with her. Rusty finds she is developing a better rapport with his assistant. She is very careful about how much information to release to the public; however, she does feel that they need to be warned. Other tabloids start creating moods of paranoia and fear among the masses. The Executioner has to be stopped.

"The Fragrant Trail" is a wonderful mystery. The author Patricia Turner does an excellent job of weaving tension and suspense into her plot. The characters are well developed. She even takes you into the minds of the victims prior to their deaths, making them dying so much worse. It also creates a feeling of vulnerability in the reader; you don't know who you can trust.

"The Executioner" by Patricia Turner is a must-read for mystery fans and should read by reader's groups. It would also make a great gift. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed. I look forward to reading other books in the Rusty Linden Mystery Series.

The Jerusalem Cycle - A Political Thriller About a City On the Brink of Disaster

The Jerusalem Cycle: The Gathering of Heroes, Villains & Oracles, is a political thriller of a novel based on the problems that currently affect the ancient city of Jerusalem today. André John Haddad writes about the present turmoil in Jerusalem and what might happen if the city isn't saved from itself.

Haddad's new novel is the story of Hedrick Zimmer, who at 88 years of age is closing in on the end of his life - but before the chapters close, he wants to help save his beloved Jerusalem from the dire future it faces if predicted events aren't prevented from happening.

Zimmer, together with the son of an old associate and a woman who could have made him forget his vows to the church, begin a mission consisting of clandestine operations designed to deter cataclysmic events that could lead to the downfall and certain destruction of Jerusalem.

Louise Margoe Destrey helps Zimmer recognize "hot-zones" of violence, such as the Congo, Brazil, Colombia and the Middle East. Destrey is head of a Boston consulting firm that puts together a group of professionals who are adept at predicting the future - and together they will present Zimmer with the stunning results of what they've discovered.

Zimmer realizes that the predictions from Destrey's group are real threats and wonders if any type of political influence, money, diplomacy or even military intervention can prevent them from happening and destroying Jerusalem.

The plan that Zimmer devises is unique and just might work if he can quell the mindset of millions before the clock runs out and it's too late. The Jerusalem Cycle will keep readers frantically turning pages to find out if history can be changed and those in power can come to an understanding that will save Jerusalem.

As a cleric, André John Haddad was always interested in Jerusalem from a historical point of view and its "central role in the world's existence." Recent past events in the Middle East makes Jerusalem's future even more perilous and Haddad realizes that unless a medium is found that can change mindsets, Jerusalem's future could be disastrous.

What will be said about Jerusalem in the future? No one really knows, but the fabled city and how it has affected the history of the human race is significant and incredibly interesting. Jerusalem lies in a region filled with turmoil and strife and is at a crossroads of its future.

Nightfall Mysteries - Curse of the Opera Game Review

Nightfall Mysteries: Curse of the Opera is an action-packed hidden object adventure game, in which an opera troupe visits a quaint village for a performance only to become entangled in mysterious disappearances and murders.

You play the part of a stagehand in this famous opera troupe which has been invited by a Count Vladd Vansig III to perform for him in his small village. Strangely enough, the village is empty except for the count and his manservant. (Honestly though, if you have been invited to perform in a village in which the only residents are a man named Vladd and his manservant, the best course of action would have been to run away!)

You start the game in your car driving the stage props to the village. Unexpectedly (or expectedly, considering this is a mystery thriller game), a car tire goes flat and the engine stalls. Your hidden puzzle adventure begins as you attempt to find your way to the village and locate the rest of the opera troupe. As you enter the village and interact with the people there, you start to realize things are not what they seem, and everyone seems to have their own hidden agenda. Then someone gets murdered, and the adventure begins in earnest.

The gameplay in Nightfall Mysteries: Curse of the Opera is primarily like an adventure puzzle game, with hidden object scenes and mini-puzzles present at almost every turn. You move between interconnected scenes and locations while trying to solve puzzles and overcome various obstacles in order to progress further.

The scenes or locations in the game are all connected similar to the dungeon maps in role-playing games. To advance from scene to scene, you would need to overcome obstacles such as opening a locked door or crossing a river whose bridge had been washed away. Solving these obstacles will involve obtaining items such as keys, which in turn are obtained by solving other puzzles, hidden object scenes or interacting directly with the environment. For instance, if you need a tree branch to solve an obstacle, you could find a saw or axe and chop down a tree in a forest scene.

The hidden object scenes that you encounter in the game are not excessively difficult. They are the traditional puzzles where you are required to find a list of random items in a busy scene, some of which can be used to solve subsequent puzzles or overcome obstacles. There are also the hidden puzzles where you are required to find 6 birds and 6 musical notes and the like. The mini-games and puzzles require more logical reasoning and problem solving, and are a refreshing break from the item-hunting in the rest of the game. If you get stuck though, there is always the option to skip the puzzles and continue with the story.

The game progression in Curse of the Opera also slightly differs from traditional hidden object games. Similar to role-playing games, your objectives or "quests" are obtained by talking to characters who are located in an "inn". And when you complete those "quests", you return to the character in question and obtain the next part of their quest.

These characters are very colorful and add a whole lot of life into the game. You have the creepy count, the soprano diva, the silent violinist, the nonchalant engineer and more. And all of them have great voice-acting complete with accents appropriate for a grand international opera troupe. The atmosphere and artwork are very immersive as well. Although all the scenes and locations are dark and gloomy (the game is called Nightfall Mysteries after all), they perfectly portray the mysterious village and its sinister inhabitants.

Curse of the Opera delivers a respectable mystery adventure game that combines the role-playing game, hidden object and puzzle game genres pretty well. It is well worth your time to come explore the mysteries surrounding Count Vladd and his secluded little village.

Victorian Mysteries - Woman in White Game Review

Immerse yourself in a 19th century mystery thriller in Victorian Mysteries: Woman in White. Play the part of a down-on-his-luck poor art tutor whose latest teaching job ends up dragging him into an inexplicable mystery. A chance meeting with a mysterious woman suddenly turns into a thrilling adventure full of secrets, murder and deceit. Use your skills to search for clues, uncover the plot and weed out the lies in this thrilling hidden object adventure game.

Woman in White is based on Wilkie Collins' 19th century mystery novel of the same name. The novel is one of the earliest forms of detective fiction with its main protagonist Walter Hartright playing the part of the "detective". In this hidden object adventure game, you take on the role of Hartright as you see the dark and mysterious Victorian England through his eyes, and attempt to solve this perplexing mystery.

As Hartright, you are short on cash and decided to take a job with the Fairlie family, teaching art to two young ladies. On your way to the mansion, you encounter a mysterious woman dressed in white who seems to know a lot about the Fairlies. The job goes well, and you get along splendidly with the two ladies, especially the beautiful Laura Fairlie. Things take a turn for the worse when Laura's fiance arrives and she becomes the center of a mysterious and treacherous plot.

You view the game through the eyes of an art teacher, and old England as shown in the game is indeed a beautiful work of art. The graphics are crisp and clean, though it is a bit dark and creepy at times due to the nature of the story. It does however create the perfect atmosphere for the game, and successfully brings the feel of Victorian England to life. It is also accompanied by a haunting soundtrack and great voice-acting that all blend together to make you feel like you're really living the mysteries in this 19th century novel.

The gameplay in Woman in White is what you would expect from a hidden object adventure game. You have the main adventure screen where you see all the locations and scenes that you can visit, with the ability to interact or zoom closer on various objects in each scene. The main screen also contains your journal which contains all the clues you have compiled so far, as well as biographies and a family tree of all the characters you meet in your adventures. Any items that you collect along the way will also appear on this screen.

Depending on what mode you choose at the start of the game, the "objects of interest" in each scene will either be highlighted to make it easier for you, or unmarked so that you have to figure out which items might be important to your investigations. Clicking on these will either zoom in closer on the object to reveal more clues and items, or launch mini-puzzles and hidden object games. Some of these objects will also require tools and items that you gather from other locations in order to interact with them. For example, you will need to collect a brush and some paint in order to touch up a dirty painting.

The hidden object scenes scattered throughout the game contain various hidden items that you will need to spot. Some of these will turn out to be useful tools to be used in other puzzles later on in your journey. The scenes are drawn up very well, with the objects blending in well with the background but not being too difficult to find. The puzzles and mini-games are also well-designed. It looks like the game developers have tried to put in new twists to these puzzles. Instead of getting a standard memory matching game, you will see a more complex version in the form of newspaper articles that you need to match... and these articles also happen to be liners for a bird cage! If you pause for too long when you encounter a new puzzle, the game will helpfully provide you with some hints on what you are supposed to do. And if you are still stuck after that, there's always the "skip" button...

What I find to be the most attractive and compelling part of the game is the strength of the story. Unlike the majority of the hidden object games out there, this one is based on a great detective novel by an established 19th century author and playwright. Because of that, the story really engages you chapter after chapter. And when you finish the game, you will feel like you have taken part in a great adventure. The Victorian Mysteries: Woman in White PC game is perfect for those of you who like detective and mystery games such as the Mystery Case Files series as well as those featuring Sherlock Holmes.
